>> 010 | oh, worm
[ It's been a few days since he'd arrived in Liyue proper and the jet lag was only now just starting to wear off. A few days and he'd managed to become familiar enough with the terrain to be able to map out any viable escape routes, discover that he does not have much of a spice tolerance and that also, the man known as "Rex Lapis" was much more of a common face in the streets than he'd imagined him to be.
At first he'd thought he might have been mistaken, that the intel he'd received was wrong in some way. With nothing but a brief description (height, weight, hair color, eye color - and really, couldn't they have come up with a better term than "cor lapis gold"?) and a semi-blurry photograph taken from the side, Childe imagined he would have to scour Liyue for at least a good week or two before he found his target. The people of this fair city didn't seem to want to deviate from their traditional norms and they all seemed to dress the same way, too, making it hard to pick any one apart in a sea of browns and blacks and golds with the occasional vibrant but respectful color thrown into the mix.
Finding "Rex Lapis" would be a chore in itself, never mind going along with the Tsaritsa-sanctioned mission he had been assigned to kill the man. He wouldn't be surprised if he didn't see Snezhnayan shores for a month or two. The harbor city wasn't exactly small, after all, and from what he could see of the photograph the man looked like every other Liyuen walking about.
Imagine his surprise when said man was spotted immediately, perusing the market at his leisure and appraising each individual valuable when it was showcased to him by a hungry-looking merchant. Childe didn't have much of an eye for antiques so they all looked the same to him; nondescript and useless, no real worth in them aside from what they could be melted into. Rex Lapis seemed to have taken fault with literally every item shown to him for over an hour, and in the end had left the stall empty-handed with a fuming, exasperated worker glaring after him.
The man's schedule was easy enough to pick apart after that. Childe had spent the entirety of the first day tailing him and working out his walking path, following him at a leisurely distance and acting every bit like an enamored tourist so taken with Liyue's sights and sounds that lingering in any one place didn't seem too out of the ordinary. Rex would go from one building to another, hitting up all the merchant stalls in-between, always alone, never once breaking his poised, methodical stride. The fact that no one else seemed to be wary or suspicious of him - which, shouldn't they be, given he was effectively the ruling head of his "family"? - Childe was starting to wonder if maybe his intel had been incorrect.
By the third day he'd set up something of a base of operations in one of the buildings that he'd seen Rex meander in and out of. It was a modestly large hotel, boasting the sort of Liyuen-style decoration that a connoisseur of the East would lose themselves in. The architecture and paintings within were distinctly in the same style as the rest of the city, immortalizing Liyue's cultural arts with every brush stroke, ever swath of paint. The people at the lobby were certainly cordial enough and, despite the backwater-country vibes the interior gave off, it was clear they were relatively up to date and rather technologically savvy, the staff able to reserve him a room for a few weeks in a matter of moments after a few swipes on their touchpads.
It might have seemed foolish to book a room in the same building that he planned to trail and potentially murder Rex Lapis in, but Childe had confidence in spades. He knew the best ways to escape the country and, barring that, it wasn't as though there weren't Fatui already infiltrating the city. The element of danger was what made it most exciting, after all.
A few days turned into a little under a week, and then a little over a week, and eventually the time came for Childe to make his move. As much as he had no issues with killing an innocent man, if word that he did got to Rex Lapis himself it wouldn't make finding him any easier. He was pretty sure the man he'd been tailing had to have been him. He looked like the one in the photograph, after all... but then, also, he wasn't entirely sure. He certainly didn't look like the mean-mugging head of a mafia family.
So Childe decides that it would be best to give him a little test of sorts.
It's around seven at night, when the lights of the city have started to flicker to light. The people on the streets are making their way home after a long day's work, threading around each other and making idle chatter in the form of greetings and farewells. Nothing more than that, since everyone has somewhere they need to be.
Childe's target is among them, his height and distinct strides making him stick out like a sore thumb. The man navigates through the crowds easily, smoothly, and were Childe not as good as he was at general reconnaissance work - thanks to his training when he was a grunt in the Fatui - he probably would have lost him minutes ago. Admittedly, there is something about this man that just screams of a higher plane of existence, he thinks, but it's not something he can actually place his finger on.
His chance to strike comes when the man takes a sudden turn into a darkened alley - a usual for him, Childe had learned, but only on certain days. He waits a few moments outside the entrance before stepping in after him, and their footsteps echo hollowly on the high walls around them as the other continues to walk, purposefully, like he hadn't just heard Childe coming in after him.
Yeah, there was no way this was Rex Lapis. Childe reasons this to himself even as he's pulling his Tokarev out from its holster at his side. He fits the silencer into the weapon with a click that seems to ring throughout the area, and he's quick to lift it up and point it at the man in front of him once they've reached a far enough distance from the streets. ]
You're a brave man, you know.
[ He's taken care to dress casually, forgoing his usual suit and vest in favor of slim-fitting jeans and a hoodie. To anyone else he would probably look like a kid attempting a robbery; to Rex, he's not quite sure. Even Childe knows from his reputation among the lower recruits that he's something of a sight on the battlefield. There's particular rumors swirling about his eyes and their hue directly correlating to all the murders he's committed.
Childe's arm never wavers, and his gaze fixates on the man's back as he speaks again, a little louder. ]
Empty your pockets.

Empty your pockets.

[ well, maybe he did. as adorably innocent as Zhongli tended to be, he doubted that even he wasn't privy to everything his brother got up to. surely he knew most of the awful things Rex did. it would be impossible for him not to, all things considering.
but he doesn't think overlong on that. Zhongli is here now, embracing him, and much of the stress and irritation he'd felt earlier was quickly melting away in the face of that. now that he could see for himself that the man was uninjured and Zhongli was safe and had not come to harm in the time they were apart, he could focus on other plans of action.
both arms go to wrap around Zhongli's waist, tightening, his face burying itself into his captured form. his breathing evens out, steady and mellow, and after the silence stretches on for few moments between them he speaks, his voice muffled in the other's clothes. ]
I've got a better idea. Why don't you come back to Snezhnaya with me?
no subject
Zhongli stiffens a little, concerned that he has completely misheard something. Of course it must have been misheard, why would Childe even think about bringing him back to Snezhnaya? Not wanting to create misunderstood awkward silence between them, Zhongli clears his throat and says a bit sheepishly: ]
I... believe I misheard you. You would like me to go back to Snezhnaya with you?
no subject
[ the way Zhongli stiffens is telling, and for good reason. it's not exactly the best idea he's had so far. it felt like his entire stay in Liyue has been nothing but terrible ideas. ]
If you don't want to go there permanently... then just a few days. Just... anywhere but here, you know? You might like it. It's cold, but that just gives more incentive to snuggle up for warmth.
no subject
[ this is fine. what could possibly go wrong? At least, this does mean Childe will leave Liyue, yes? Then Zhongli can properly deal with the Tsaritsa and her antics without having him get caught in the middle of anything. ]
no subject
his mind is already working, trying to figure out the best way to actually get Zhongli into Snezhnaya. the man was too pretty to slip in unnoticed, so maybe a disguise of some sort? not that there was really anyone going out to Morepesok, really, but one could never be too careful.
... but even if they did, and they happened to try and get the jump on them? Childe definitely wouldn't say no to a fight. ]
Then let's go now. Right now. Do you need to pack a bag?
no subject
[ What is Childe thinking? Zhongli shouldn't be entertaining his ideas, especially one that may bring trouble upon him, but at current he can't think of what trouble he will get into. It should be fine. Very very few people know what he looks like, afterall.
Perhaps he should indeed pack a bag? Unfortunately, the only thing he can think of putting into the bag at such short notice is the stuffed whale and some papers for entrance to the northern country
because someone always does his packing for him. This doesn't... really feel like a vacation or a business trip, though. ]no subject
[ the way he says this, so firm and without room for question, is pretty telling of how he feels about Zhongli. enough to kidnap him away to Snezhnaya and take care of everything he could ever want, obviously. ]
Maybe a change of clothes, for sure. It's pretty cold in my homeland and if you aren't used to it it'll probably be pretty hard to get used to. I'll be there to warm you up, of course, but it's a pretty long way from the airport to Morepesok.
[ though... when he thinks about it, maybe having Zhongli stay with him and his family was jumping the gun. he liked him, but he also didn't want to scare him away.
there are motels nearby they can stay at, with larger, fancier hotels a little farther away. they're closer to the city and the palace and a good in-between for when he inevitably has to return to the Tsaritsa for his debriefing if he decides he wants to. as far as he's concerned his mission isn't over until he reports back. ]
no subject
There's so much going on in his head that he doesn't hear anything Childe may say as he proceeds to open the door— and it's promptly brought back to reality by a suitcase, an expensive looking briefcase, as well as his heavier coat and gloves that he cannot remember the last time he saw a need to wear (perhaps it was ... for Snezhnaya back then, as well.)
There is a soft sigh, him performing a visual sweep of the hall suspiciously for a sign of either of the two subordinates of his that are surely responsible for this (as well as some eavesdropping.) ]
...Ah, it seems I am ready to leave.
no subject
when Zhongli opens the door to the sight of his suitcase and his jacket and gloves resting in the hallway beyond, there's a moment or two where Childe feels his hackles race, instinct alerting him to the threat of potential danger with the realization that someone might have been listening in on them. perhaps Rex Lapis himself. it takes Zhongli's blasé reaction to everything to calm him down with the realization that this was probably something he'd expected, and they were not in any real danger.
which was good, because he didn't want to take too long lest Zhongli change his mind. ]
Ah? That's good! [ he chirps, swinging his legs over the side of the bed and getting to his feet. whether it's because he's still feeling the lingering effects of Rex's... whatever he did to him, or because he's a quick recover it's hard to say, but walking isn't as big an issue as it should have been and it's only a moment before he's at Zhongli's side. ]
You're not gonna knock me out or anything to get out of here, are you?
no subject
Of course not! Why would I do such a thing? If I seem ungrateful or reluctant, I am merely... confused. No one has ever asked such a thing of me before.
[ this seems kind of like a big deal for someone you haven't known more than two days to want to do something like this.
Not to mention, although he said nothing in response to it, Childe's sincere declaration that he would "take care of" him has Zhongli flustered and wondering if Childe is going to wake up tomorrow and regret this immensely. He doesn't seem intoxicated in any manner, but who knows...! ]
no subject
[ coming to the building feels like so long ago he honestly can't remember. for all he knows he might have just been moved, given how long he'd been out.
he supposes it doesn't matter now. now, with Zhongli's luggage essentially packed and ready to go, all they really had to do was leave the building. he's unsure if Rex Lapis intends to put a stop to him basically taking his twin brother out of here but he has a feeling if they stick around to find out they might just have to fight their way out of the building.
... actually, that doesn't sound like a terrible idea. despite everything that'd been done to him Childe didn't find the prospect terrifying or unappealing in the least. ]
Shall we, then?
no subject
Very well, now is as appropriate time as any. [ he's doing his best to refocus and make sense of this better, but so far the more he thinks on it the more it is both fine and also something of a bad idea. Then again, it seems that all he can do is go along with bad ideas when it comes to Childe. ]
no subject
If you can get us to the docks, I can handle the rest. I have contacts waiting in Liyue ready with a vessel to take us to Snezhnaya. Don't worry, I'll take care of everything.
no subject
Yes, the easiest way would be to take the passageway to the docks that you used to arrive here. The fastest way would be to get a ride from a taxi. [ Zhongli will assume Childe wants to take the longer but more direct route of going on foot.
He will direct Childe if the assassin seems uncertain how to arrive back in the tunnels. Luckily, it is quite straightforward—head downstairs to the basement (which is fully finished) and the passageway is just one of many that can be taken, marked with an art painting of Liyue featuring the harbor. The other passageway entrances have other and equally lovely paintings to one side of them, all depicting a different parts of Liyue. ]
no subject
in little to no time at all they're emerging out of the tunnel and eventually find their way to the docks. true to his word Childe makes sure to handle Zhongli appropriately and doesn't let go of his hand the entire way. when speed and furtiveness becomes a necessity he's quick to help him with his luggage, and when they find themselves at the docks he leaves Zhongli for only a moment to go and converse with a few unassuming dockhands that possess the same tawny-colored hair as him.
snatches of their conversation might reach Zhongli on a passing breeze, but it's nothing of consequence and nothing he's sure that the man understands. a lot of it is fanciful phrases that don't make a lick of sense, something about clenching hands and dishes and the more direct request of "having a go with the pretty one" that's accompanied with a particularly salacious look in Zhongli's direction.
Childe's pleasantly Snezhnayan response is to threaten to cut off their hands and gouge out their eyes if they so much as look in Zhongli's direction, and the matter is left at that. a few moments later and he returns to Zhongli's side, smiling warmly at him and ushering him aboard a boat that's deceptively small but quite sturdy enough to brave even the choppiest of waters. the bow of the ship is rounded, marking it as the sort of vessel able to break through thinner patches of ice should they come across them in their voyage, and there are rooms below deck that are a mixture of cramped and leaking.
mercifully, Childe leads Zhongli to a cozy, private one sequestered off the main hall. with a lock on the door and a spacious bed for two, it's definitely cozy enough to make the journey in relative comfort. various other furniture's tucked here and there, and there's even a little bathroom hidden away for their own private use with a standing shower and a toilet that's little more than a hole opened up over the ocean. ]
You can sleep now, if you want. We've got a long journey ahead of us.
no subject
Zhongli is still relatively quizzical once Childe returns, but he offers a gentle smile in return to the warm one given by the assassin. As he's lead by the hand onto the boat and to the room where they will be staying, Zhongli remembers reading a story about a scenario like this of sorts— although they were lovers. It still prompts the question: those in the story eloped within three days of meeting one another, but what exactly are he and Childe? Although what Childe is doing is actually harmless from the Liyue side of things, the assassin is under the impression that Rex Lapis is going to be quite unamused when he discovers that they have both vanished and perhaps pursue. It doesn't mean Zhongli is feeling so certain about how Childe plans to deal with having him in Snezhnaya. If the Tsaritsa wanted Rex Lapis dead, her other assassins will certainly not believe (nor care, even if it were true) that he is the mafia head's twin brother. Perhaps the only option for Zhongli is to find a way to meet with the Tsaritsa herself and understand what she is truly playing at in all of this.
Zhongli will finally glance at Childe, letting his baggage down before gently tugging the other towards the bed. ] You are not leaving, are you? If you must, can you spare some time for me, first?
[ other than asking for the plush whale, this is the first time he's asking for something directly from Childe, and he hopes it's not too much. He's not afraid, but the idea of being left alone leaves him a little unsettled for some reason that he can't place. ]
no subject
but Childe definitely won't complain. he'd had Zhongli enough times last night - was it really only last night??? - that his body still felt the echoes of their sex, still stirred and warmed with interest just from being around the other man.
they did have a long journey ahead of them, after all. ]
But if you are... I'd be more than happy to help you with that. [ his fingers gently alight on Zhongli's cheek, cupping it, thumb brushing in the space just under his lip in a gesture that's more affectionate than it has any right to be. ] Snezhnaya is very cold, after all. We should make sure you're nice and warm at all times.
no subject
Zhongli feels silly, but he can't help the slight elation at Childe's affectionate touch: everything about him feels warm and safe and sincere. He shouldn't feel this way around anyone, and yet... (the difference is harsher than night and day in how he behaves with Rex Lapis to Zhongli — it's perhaps almost impossible to do anything but fall for him.)
As for how this looks, well, Zhongli hasn't thought of it, but the look Childe gives him along with his words seems enough to make Zhongli aware of the suggestive nature — and overall he doesn't mind in the least desire seeming a bit shy from the flush to his cheeks. Eyes quite soft and doe-like, he glances towards the bed before back at Childe again. Rex Lapis did leave the assassin unsatisfied, so Zhongli will make sure to pick up the slack.
With a small smile, he sits at the edge of the bed to remove his shoes before tugging the other down next to do the same if he hasn't begun already.
As soon as Childe finishes, Zhongli will move to catch his lips with his own, but not before responding to the assassin finally. ] I'm so very cold, already. Please, warm me up.
no subject
[ right as he says that the foghorn sounds, cutting through the air and announcing their departure. the boat creaks as the anchor's lifted and the sail dropped, and the steady beat of oars to launch them off the docks sounds in steady slaps against the still water.
there's fortunately nothing on the nightstand in the room that needs to be secured, and Zhongli's own luggage will lean over just a smidge as the boat rocks and properly rights itself. Childe doesn't pay attention to any of this, because Zhongli chooses at that moment to look at him softly, tenderly, and like the first time all over again he can't help but be drawn into him.
their shoes get dropped off the side but he doesn't look over, doesn't look at anything that isn't the man beside him. he's kissing him, now, and Childe is hardly the sort of person to not take what he wants so it takes little prompting for him to return the kiss, cupping at the other's face and angling him properly to deepen it.
he chuckles, soft and warm and affectionate, and gently presses a hand against Zhongli's shoulder to guide him back onto the mattress. ]
We can't have that, now can we? How would you like me to warm you up... [ he's quick to follow, leaning his head over Zhongli's own and licking at the seam of his lips playfully. ] ... Zhongli?
no subject
It's not that he doesn't know what he wants, it's more how he wants to say it to entice Childe. Bringing his palms to cup either side of the other's face, he stares up at him with a pretty smile. ] Did you want to cuddle? It will make sleeping easier and be very warm.
[ yes, he's deliberately avoiding saying he wants sex even though now that it's been brought to his attention he most certainly does want it. they have a long journey, there's no need to rush. Also, he may be a little too shy to ask so boldly and directly for such since his inhibitions are not quite so lowered as they were last night. ]
no subject
as the boat creaks and the faint sound of the waves lapping against the hull drift by, Childe lets his hand settle on the other man's hips before he lays himself down and gently rolls Zhongli over to tuck into himself. the grip he has on him turns into an arm sliding across his side, pulling him in close so he can rest his chin on the other's head and snuggle up to him like he'd asked him to.
he has half a mind to simply leave it at that. it wasn't as though Zhongli had any reason to be shy after everything they'd done. teasing the brunet seemed almost second nature and a mild form of revenge after he'd been made to buy that expensive whale-toy for him. ]
You know, if you're this cold and we haven't even gotten to Snezhnaya yet this might be a problem, Zhongli...
no subject
The other is incredibly warm, and Zhongli shivers a little as he indulges. Who would have thought the embrace of another person could be so satisfying? ]
Mm, it is fine. I will stay in bed all day and wait for your return if the cold is too much stuffing the days. [ it won't be, but... ]
no subject
[ the prospect prompts a few other images, as well, since if Zhongli was lounging around waiting for him he didn't really need to wear clothes. the longer he spends around the man the more he feels any unease and uncertainty about his mission fading away into the background, as though in the face of Zhongli it quickly lost its power over him.
Childe knows he's getting ridiculously, stupidly attached to someone who was related to the target he was supposed to kill. he knows this, and yet all it takes to dispel his own lingering doubts about what he's doing, his guilt over failing his mission is one look at Zhongli's tender gaze and his soft smile. nothing else seems to matter in the face of that. ]
Maybe in something cute and black and lacy? Something to really emphasize this gift you've got back here. [ his hand immediately finds its way to Zhongli's ass, clasping one of his cheeks in hand and giving it a hard smack.] Seriously, do you do squats or something? Your ass is ridiculously fat.
no subject
( How dangerous... but in this instance of time, it's the perfect kind of dangerous to pursue.)
Zhongli is generally listening to the other despite drifting in his own thoughts, but he only really had a response when his attention is fully brought to the the conversation between them with that slap to his ass.
Oh. Honestly, he doesn't know what to say. He's pretty sure a "fat ass" is a compliment in this case just like last time, but he swears he's also heard it used as not so much of one before, as well. ] Squats...? No, that is not usually part of my daily routine. I am grateful to have such an ass to take... [ slightly hesitant but he can certainly say it. ] your dick, however, so thank you. [ —for the compliment ... ...and Childe's dick. ]
And what exactly would be "black and lacy" that is also considered "cute" to you? [ doesn't really sound like men's clothes. ]
no subject
the blatant hesitation when Zhongli compliments him and basically thanks his dick for all the fucking it's doing does make him laugh, though, and he dips his head to press a kiss against the man's forehead. ]
You're too cute. But... I dunno. Maybe some panties, some lingerie... unless you're not into that sort of thing, then we can forget I said it. [ and it's probably a point in Childe's favor that he doesn't sound disappointed in the way that might guilt-trip another person, doesn't attempt to pursue this particular line of thinking any more. ] I like you as you are, too.
[ terribly, terribly so, if the fact that he'd decided to whisk him off to Snezhnaya within a day of meeting him was any indication. the only people he did that for, usually, were people he was extraditing out of the countries they were holed up in. ]
