[ It wasn't supposed to turn out like this.

The plan had been simple, initially. Infiltrate the Fontainian court of justice in order to get close enough to investigate the Iudex and acquire the codenamed "Gnosis" in his possession. Childe wasn't exactly sure what it was, but if it was important enough for him to be here then it was probably something exceedingly valuable.

Getting put on trial wasn't hard. Petty crime wasn't really his thing, but he could put up with it if it were an order from the Tsaritsa herself. Fast forward to his sentencing and he'd been offered a choice: rot or serve. The decision had been an easy one and he'd spent a majority of his time showing off his impressive arsenal of skills to make him seem too valuable for anything less than a spot at the Iudex's side.

Neuvillete was ... strange, to say the least. Perhaps living a life far-removed from ordinary people had given him some complexes, but he wasn't terribly hard to get along with.

Wriothesley, on the other hand... ]

Come on, comrade... [ The Fortress of Meropide was what they called it. To Childe, it just looked like a glorified cage. He's lost track of how long he's been here, his arms aching where they're being suspended above his head just enough to keep him on his tiptoes. The previously pristine, crisp Fontaine uniform he'd been gifted was dirty and torn in some places, no doubt a consequence of manhandling.

Somewhere in the distance he thinks he can hear the mourning notes of Clair de Lune sounding from a record player. It almost feels too out of place, like some this is all just some kind of joke. ]

Don't you've think you've got the wrong guy? You think Neuvillette wouldn't vet his people before letting them get too close?
